Make Mother's Day special with DIY gifts
Make Mother's Day special with DIY gifts

Since having children we’ve transitioned from buying gifts for our mothers to making them gifts from our kids. So, each year we get our mom’s a card from us and give them a homemade gift from the kiddos. This year I chose to make them each a fun DIY mason jar succulent planter, personalized with the kids hand prints. They were super easy, and since I had most of the materials lying around only cost me $5 each! I’ll give you a quick tutorial for this idea .Have fun, and if you’re a mom, Happy Mother’s Day! 🙂

Succulent Planter

MATERIALS NEEDED:

STEP 1: PAINT THE JAR

Using your foam brush, paint the entire bottom of jar with your chalk paint. From the bottom of the cap-rim, all the way around and on the very bottom too. I gave it two coats with about an hour to dry in between.

STEP 2: APPLY HAND PRINTS

Next, apply acrylic paint to the palm of your child’s hand and press it onto the side of the jar. I chose to do my kid’s hand prints in two different colors, but you could definitely do them the same color too. Let dry.

STEP 3: SAND AND PERSONALIZE

Using your sand paper, apply light pressure to the jar and remove the paint from the writing or markings on the jar. I liked the look of a worn, rustic mason jar, so I chose to sand mine down. You wouldn’t have to do this if you like the look of a brighter, more fully covered jar! I also wanted to make note of when this was made, so I used a sharpie paint pen to write “Mother’s Day 2024” and my kid’s ages on the bottom.

STEP 4: PLANT SUCCULENT

Lastly, add a bit of potting soil to the bottom and plant your succulent in your jar!

And that’s it! Simple, easy, and inexpensive! And yet, they’re still pretty. I definitely like making things that are personalized from the kids but still nice looking decor. 🙂

I hope you’re feeling inspired to go out and DIY a cute gift for your mom or grandma! Let me know if you have any questions!
