Helpful Tips:
-
Protect your Halloween workspace: You need water for the sponge canvas to puff up, so you’ll want to place your paper on a tray, plate, or baking sheet. This will ensure your table stays safe from any spooky splashes.
-
Add water like a potion: A little goes a long way! Use an eye dropper or water brush pen to drip water slowly onto your design. Watching the canvas rise section by section is half the fun — like magic happening right before your eyes!

How does this Halloween sponge canvas art work?
It may look like ordinary paper, but this “spooky canvas” is actually a sheet of compressed sponge. Add a little water, and it magically puffs up into a thick, soft sponge — almost like your drawing is coming to life! The reason behind the transformation is called capillary action — the scientific term for how water moves through tiny spaces inside the sponge, causing it to expand.
When you drip water onto your Halloween design, the sponge absorbs it and begins to puff up in those exact spots. You can watch your spooky artwork grow in 3D right before your eyes! The water eventually spreads through the whole surface, but the most magical moment is seeing your boo-tiful artwork start to rise off the page.

What markers work best for making 3D Halloween sponge art?
We tested a lot of options when we first made our 3D sponge canvas art, and found that acrylic paint markers worked the best. They give the boldest look, and keep their colour well when water is added.
You can also use Sharpie permanent markers, if that’s all you have. The outlines of the drawings became a bit fuzzy as the sponge absorbed water, which we didn’t like — though with this Halloween art project it might add to the eeriness!

What can I draw on my Halloween 3D sponge canvas paper?
The possibilities are endless! We made a jack-o-lantern pumpkin, skull, witch hat, eyeball, black cat, ghost, and even a zombie hand! You can also draw a:
-
Bat flying across the full moon
-
Haunted house silhouette
-
Spooky gravestone(s)
-
Spider or spider web
-
Witch’s cauldron
-
Potion bottle
-
Wrapped candy
Bold, simple shapes work best. The bigger the filled-in areas, the puffier and more dramatic your design will look once the sponge expands!
This Halloween 3D sponge canvas craft is such a magical mix of art and science. It’s simple to set up, fun to watch, and totally unique every time. Kids will love drawing their favourite festive designs and then seeing them puff up right before their eyes.
This Halloween craft is a little spooky, a tiny bit messy, and a whole lot of fun!
