How to Make a Honeycomb Ornament
Materials:
- Free Printable Honeycomb Ornament Template(more templates found below the tutorial)
- Christmas coloured cardstock(or printer paper)
- White glue
- Metallic baker’s twine(or other string)
Equipment:
Instructions:
Step 1: Find what you need
- Gather your supplies and materials.
- Print one of our free honeycomb ornament templates. You can find one link in the materials list above and the rest below this tutorial.(We recommend printing the template on cardstock or tracing the paper onto cardboard for a sturdy template that’s easy to trace.)
- Place the template onto coloured paper and cut out the shape.
- Repeat, cutting out a total of 18 pieces.
Step 3: Fold and glue the paper pieces
- Fold each of the pattern pieces in half vertically.
- Unfold a template piece. Add a thin horizontal line of glue from the middle crease out to the edge.
- Fold the paper in half again, connecting the two sides with glue.Repeat for all other pieces.
Step 4: Connect the paper pieces
- Add 2 horizontal lines of glue to one side of the folded shape.Make these glue lines towards the top and bottom.
- Set one of the other folded shapes on top of the paper with glue, lining up the edges as you connect the 2 pieces of paper.
- Repeat this process until all the folded shapes are glued together.(Add the 2 lines of glue, set the next piece on top, etc.)
- Make sure the shapes are well lined up and then add a couple binder clips to the straight edge. This will ensure the shapes stay neatly together as the glue dries.(If you don’t have binder clips you can also place a heavy book or baking dish on top of the papers.)
Step 5: Add an ornament hanger
- Cut an 8 inch piece of string. Fold it in half and make a knot, creating a looped ornament hanger.
- Add glue to the top flat edge of the bundle (the side with the folds) and set the knot into the glue. The loop of the hanger should extend past the top of the paper.
- Allow the glue to dry for at least several hours or, ideally, overnight.
Step 6: Connect the two sides
- Remove the binder clips carefully once the glue is dry.
- Slowly unfold the ornament, carefully opening it up and bringing the 2 outsides together (eg. the former bottom and top of the bundle should be touching).
- Open the ornament slightly and add 2 horizontal lines of glue to one of the inside (former outside) pieces.Make the lines of glue in the same spots as before.
- Connect the 2 sides, pressing them together. Then use binder clips (or paper clips) to keep the ornament together as the glue dries.
- Remove the binder clips once the glue is completely dry.
- Your honeycomb ornament is complete!
Helpful Tips:
- Don’t add too much glue to the template pieces, or they might get stuck together in places you don’t want.
- Choose a colour palette for your paper ornaments that will match your Christmas tree and existing decorations!
- If you have a Cricut, or other type of cutting machine, you can convert the PDF templates to SVG files. This will make it a lot easier and quicker to get perfectly cut shapes.

What size honeycomb paper ornaments do the templates make?
Here are the sizes of honeycomb ornaments you can make by using the above templates:
- Ball: 4 inch diameter and 4 inches tall
- Bell: 4-1/2 inch diameter (at the bottom) and 4-1/2 inches tall
- Egg: 3 inch diameter and 4 inches tall
- Icicle: 3 inch diameter (at the widest part) and 7 inches tall
- Lantern: 4 inch diameter and 5 inches tall
But you can make different sizes of ornaments simply by scaling the pattern smaller or larger before printing.
What paper is best for making a honeycomb ornament?
We used both printer paper and cardstock to make our honeycomb ornaments, and both options worked very well. You can also use construction paper, though the finished product won’t look quite as clean and elegant.
Thinner paper is, of course, easier to fold than cardstock. This makes the coloured printer paper a better option for smaller ornaments.
But we recommend cardstock for a sturdier ornament that will last longer. The cardstock ornaments we made feel a lot stronger than the paper ones. We suspect they’ll hold up a lot better in storage, allowing you to make ornaments that will last for years to come.
How else can I decorate my paper honeycomb ornament?
You can change up the look of your honeycomb ornaments by using patterned paper, or even 2 different colours of paper.
Or add wood beads, jingle bells, or pearls to the ornament hanger. You can even add a longer string so that these decorations dangle below the ornament. Or make a colourful tassel from macrame cord!
Making a honeycomb ornament is easier than you might think! These beautiful DIY Christmas decorations look super intricate, but we promise they’re incredibly simple and relaxing to create.
These paper ornaments will definitely add a pretty finishing touch to your tree. You’ll want to make them in all different sizes and colours!
