Helpful Tips:

  1. Depending on the type of seed you use, your grass hair may not last a long time. Certain types of seeds need to be spaced out more than others and won’t survive long if planted as close together as we did for this craft. If you plan to keep your plant growing for a long time, look for seeds that don’t require much spacing between them or transplant your grass into a big pot once it begins to outgrow the cup.
  2. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. If the top of the soil dries out completely, the seeds might not sprout properly.

What kind of seeds work best for growing grass hair?

When making these grass hair planters with kids, look for a fast growing seed so your kids will see results quickly. Some examples of seeds that sprout and grow quickly are wheatgrass, chia, cat grass, and alfalfa.

We recommend wheatgrass seeds because they sprout quickly and grow thick and straight. Regular lawn grass seeds (such as ryegrass or fescue) also work well!

How much water should I add to grow grass in a cup?

For growing grass in a cup, you want the soil to be moist to the touch but not overly wet. Lightly water it every day or two, just enough to keep the soil damp without pooling water at the bottom. You can also try using a self-watering globe or spike to help keep the soil moist.

Can I trim the grass hair?

Yes! Once the grass head’s hair reaches a few inches tall, you can style it however you like. Give it a fun haircut with kid-safe scissors—just make sure not to cut too low, or you might damage the new growth.

These silly grass hair planters are a hilarious and heartwarming way to add a little green fun to your space! Plant your seeds, watch the magic happen, and get ready to give your new “friend” the ultimate makeover!
